As I head back from a lovely long weekend in Nova Scotia visiting my daughter and her boyfriend, I’ve been reflecting not only on what a fabulous weekend we had enjoying the beauty of Halifax and the surrounding areas, but also on what an exciting and meaningful week it has been professionally.

Last week in Ontario, we received the news that the government is moving forward with expanding the dental hygiene scope of practice to include prescribing radiographs and administering local anesthetic.

What incredible news for our profession.

I think many of us expected prescribing radiographs would happen first, followed years later by local anesthetic. To see both moving forward together feels significant. These advancements continue to elevate the care we provide while pushing our profession forward in such a positive way.

It truly feels like an exciting time to be a Dental Hygienist.

We also just relaunched The RDH View and I’m so excited to share it with you. For those of you who are newer to rdhu, The RDH View is our talk show and passion project that has evolved over the years alongside technology and our profession.

When we first launched in 2012, we had a cast of four and would gather together in person with a massive capture station and videographer to stream live across the country. We later relaunched again in 2019, continuing to connect and share conversations together in studio. Once the pandemic hit, we pivoted to Zoom, which allowed us to continue the conversations in a simpler and more accessible way.

Today, I’m excited to share the next evolution of The RDH View.

Episodes will now be available not only on YouTube and inside your personal rdhu portals, but also in audio format across many podcast platforms. Some episodes will be professionally recorded in-studio, while others will be delivered through live-streaming conversations, allowing us to continue connecting in different and meaningful ways.

We have invested in new equipment and partnered with a professional production team to elevate the experience even further. It has been exciting to already see downloads coming in from across Canada, the United States, and even Singapore through a variety of podcast apps and platforms.

Our goal is to continue creating meaningful conversations that educate, inspire, support, and connect our profession while making the content easier to access wherever and however you prefer to listen or watch.

Another exciting highlight this week was the launch of the Spring Issue of Oral Hygiene.

I have the privilege of sitting on the editorial board and curating one issue each year. Last year’s issue focused on research, while this year’s theme is implementation — something I am deeply passionate about. Learning is important, but implementation is where transformation truly happens.

A heartfelt thank you to all of the contributors who shared their expertise and time for this issue. I appreciate you so much.

What a wonderful week of celebration, growth, and evolution for our profession.

Thank you for being on this journey with us.

Warmly,

Kathleen
