Every Tuesday morning I find myself asking… what will I write about today?
After all these years of writing On Track Tuesday (with only a few missed along the way), I’ve realized something…
The topic always finds me.
It’s usually right in front of me—in what I’m doing, who I’m connecting with, and what’s unfolding in real time.
And today… it was very clear.
Instrumentation.
This morning started with an email from the Managing Editor at the Oral Health Group regarding the Spring issue of Oral Health—the issue I’m responsible for curating.
As part of the editorial board, I have the opportunity to shape one issue each year—and this year’s theme is Implementation.
Included in that… is my article on implementing an instrumentation program into your practice.
First hint.
Next, I headed out for an in-office visit that Curion had asked me to do. A nearby practice—Appleby Dental—wanted to see the LM RondoPlus in action.
Of course, I said yes.
This office holds a special place for me—they supported my instrument company years ago and trusted our maintenance program. Walking back in and meeting Shannon, their Hygiene Lead, felt like a full-circle moment.
Second hint.
From there, it’s been a day of preparation…
Finalizing a private, customized program in Windsor with Lorraine—which, of course, includes instrumentation…
And getting ready for this Saturday’s hands-on sharpening and instrumentation session at rdhu.
So… do you see the theme for this week’s On-Track Tuesday?
Instrumentation.
But more importantly…
Implementation of instrumentation.
Because here’s the thing—
Looking at a power sharpener like the LM RondoPlus isn’t just about the purchase.
It’s about what happens next.
This is where so many practices get stuck.
We invest in great tools…
But we don’t always build the system around them.
If you’re bringing something new like this into your practice, consider this:
1. Who will lead the program?
Every successful system has ownership.
2. Who will be responsible for sharpening?
Clarity creates consistency.
3. When—and how—will training happen?
There are incredible resources available. Use them. Build confidence as a team.
4. What will your rotation system look like?
Tracking matters. A simple log can transform accountability and longevity.
The LM RondoPlus truly is a game changer—easy to use, efficient, and gentle on the instrument edge.
But even the best technology needs a plan behind it.
What I loved about Appleby Dental is that they already get this.
They have systems.
They have leaders.
They have ownership within their team.
Each dental hygienist leads something—and that creates a culture of accountability and growth.
And here’s a funny thing…
On my way there, I was listening to the RDH Canada Podcast with Beth Parkes as a guest.
And in a full-circle moment…
As I pulled into the parking lot, Beth began describing this very office.
She didn’t name it—but I knew exactly who she was talking about, as she had worked there early in her career!
And on the drive back…
I found myself unexpectedly emotional.
Hearing Beth share her journey…
and reflecting on the role we can play in one another’s paths along the way.
If you get a chance, have a listen.
So this week, I’ll leave you with this:
It’s not about what you purchase.
It’s about what you build around it.
That’s where transformation happens.
If you’d like to dive deeper, my full article on implementing an instrumentation program will be featured in the upcoming Spring issue of Oral Health. This link will sign you up for their monthly newsletter. You can subscribe for their quarterly journal as well.
(You can subscribe—print or digital—it’s complimentary.)
And if you haven’t already, I highly recommend tuning into the RDH Canada Podcast—
Joe Siegfried and Liisa Moore are doing incredible work connecting hygienists across the country. For those of you from other countries, what a great way to learn about dental hygiene in Canada. Click here to their YouTube channel and you can find them in your Podcast app.
Thank you for being a part of rdhu! Have a wonderful week!
Warmly,
Kathleen
