Hello from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia!

I am here visiting my daughter and her boyfriend, and it gave me a little space to pause and reflect…

There’s something I’ve been thinking about lately.

The Referral Queen (And Why It Feels So Good to Share)

Over the years, I’ve been called the “Referral Queen.”

And really… it started long before rdhu.

When my kids were little, I was constantly sharing —
activities we loved, places we went, things that made life easier or more fun.

“Have you tried this?”
“You would love this.”
“You have to go here.”

It never felt like referring.

It just felt like… caring enough to share.

Recently, a friend commented on my lashes.

She thought I had extensions.

I didn’t — they were tinted and curled.

And without hesitation, I said:

“You have to go see Sukhi.”

I realized something in that moment…

I felt good making that referral.

And here’s the beautiful part:

  • My friend felt excited
  • Sukhi felt supported (she even mentioned the last time I was there how much she appreciates referrals)
  • And I felt connected to both of them

That’s the kind of referral I love.

It also made me reflect on how I tend to refer…

I only share places, people, and experiences where I know someone will be well taken care of — where the experience truly matters.

For example, there are a couple of upcoming events I’ve been naturally talking about lately.

The DHPO Retreat coming up in Keene, Ontario, in 10 days — such a wonderful opportunity to connect with like-minded dental hygienists from different parts of Canada, step away from the operatory, and spend a couple of days learning and recharging together.

And the Women in Dentistry Symposium next month in Toronto — always an inspiring event that brings together so many incredible voices in our profession.

And then there are experiences that stay with you…

The Denobi Awards is one of those.

After the incredible experience I had last month, it’s something I now love sharing with others.

It’s a growing movement that celebrates not only clinical excellence, but also service, mentorship, innovation, and community impact — something our profession needs more of.

The 7th Annual Denobi Awards Gala will take place March 13, 2027 in Portland, Oregon, with nominations opening October 1st.

Just to name a few.

These are the kinds of experiences I feel good sharing… because I know the people I refer will leave feeling inspired, supported, and energized.

Why Referrals Feel So Good

There’s actually psychology behind this.

When we help someone — even in a small way — our brain releases dopamine, creating a sense of satisfaction and connection.

We are wired to feel good when we:

  • Help someone solve a problem
  • Share something valuable
  • Connect people to something meaningful

It’s not about incentives…

It’s about impact and connection.

When Referrals Start to Feel “Off”

We’ve all seen it…

“Refer a patient this month and be entered to win a Dyson.”
“Refer a friend and receive a free whitening pen.”

While well-intentioned, this can sometimes:

  • Feel transactional
  • Shift the focus from care to reward
  • Create doubt for the person being referred
(“Are they recommending this because it’s good… or because they get something?”)

That’s not the kind of energy we want tied to trust.

A Different Approach (That Feels Natural)

What if instead of rewarding referrals
we simply equipped people to share?

One simple way to do this is through what I like to call Share Kits.

Small, thoughtful items your patients can pass along to someone they care about:

A whitening guide
“Know someone who would love a brighter smile? Feel free to pass this along.”

A fresh breath guide
“Know someone who struggles with bad breath? This might help.”

A Stimmie (I love this one!)
“Know someone who could benefit from this? Share it with them.”

The Oral-B Professional Partners Program Postcard
“Know someone who could benefit from a power brush? This gives them access to professional recommendations and preferred pricing — feel free to pass it along.”

Paired with a small card from your practice — not as a promotion, but as a gentle touchpoint so they know where it came from.

For example:

Front of Card:
Know someone who could benefit from this?

Back of Card:
From your friends at Oral Wellness Studio

Simple. Thoughtful. Shareable.

A Thought to Leave You With

The best referrals don’t come from programs…
They come from genuine experiences worth talking about.

When someone feels:

  • cared for
  • listened to
  • supported

They naturally want to share that with others.

Not because they’re rewarded…
But because it feels good to help someone else experience the same.

This Week’s Reflection

What is something you genuinely love — in your practice or in your life — that you could share with someone this week?

No script.
No incentive.

Just a simple…
“You would love this.”

Sometimes the most powerful growth strategy isn’t marketing…
It’s creating an experience so meaningful that people can’t help but share it.

With gratitude,
Kathleen
