Last week, we talked about what happens when life throws more rocks our way—unexpected challenges, shifting priorities, and the need to adapt. This week, I want to explore something just as important: the power of the pause.

In the fast-paced world we live in, we often feel the pressure to react immediately, keep pushing forward, and check things off our never-ending to-do lists. But what if the best way to move forward isn’t to rush ahead—but to pause instead?

Pausing allows us to:

1. Gain Clarity Before Reacting

Whether it’s a tough conversation, an overwhelming decision, or a stressful situation, taking a moment to pause can help us respond with intention instead of reacting impulsively. A deep breath, a short walk, or even stepping away for a few minutes can make all the difference.

2. Reset and Recharge

We can’t pour from an empty cup. Pausing—whether it’s through mindfulness, rest, or simply slowing down—helps prevent burnout and allows us to show up fully in our personal and professional lives.

3. Make More Thoughtful Decisions

Have you ever sent an email or made a decision in the heat of the moment that you later regretted? Giving yourself permission to pause before responding can lead to better outcomes and fewer regrets.

I have personally integrated the pause over the last couple of years. I used to 'volunteer' to do something during meetings. I was always quick to say, "I will do that. I can do that." Now, I stay quiet and reflect after the meeting. If it still feels like something I would like to do, I will notify those involved.

When I receive news that does not favour me personally or my business, I pause and don’t react. I find this helps with my recovery time as well.

I run a fundraiser on my lake every year to raise funds for the Huntsville Hospital Foundation. There was a conflict with one of the members of the band, and rather than trying to switch weekends and coordinate with all the activities on the lake, I decided a pause was in order. We can revisit it next year.

These are just a few examples where the pause—and knowing when I am pausing—has helped me.

So, my challenge for you this week: Find a moment to pause before reacting, making a decision, or moving to the next task. See how it shifts your mindset and energy.

I’d love to hear from you—how do you incorporate pauses into your day? Let’s keep the conversation going!

Wishing you a week of mindful pauses and renewed clarity!
