Sometimes it’s easy to forget that continuing education isn’t just a regulatory requirement—it’s a commitment we make to ourselves, our clients, and our profession. As dental hygienists, we are part of a self-regulated profession, which means we are trusted to uphold high standards—not only in our clinical practice, but also in our commitment to continuous learning. It’s how we stay engaged and keep growing in our everyday practice.
When I was in Vienna a couple of weeks ago, I met a professor from Norway, and I loved what he said: “The real education happens after school.” It’s in participating in professional development and post-education that we truly expand our knowledge and skills.
Recently, I came across a discussion in a dental hygiene Facebook group where some expressed that they only pursue CE when it’s absolutely necessary—like during an audit. “Who has time for CE? Let’s get real here!”
I know most of you reading this do not fit into this category—because you’re here, in this community with us. I truly feel that those who think this way just don’t know what they’re missing. When we participate in engaging professional development, it recharges us. It puts that bounce back in our step when we return to practice on Monday morning.
This type of thinking—limiting CE to audits—really holds us back. There’s nothing more exciting and engaging than participating in one of rdhu’s programs. It’s more than just CE—it’s professional development wrapped in an experience.
I get it. We’re all busy. But continuing education is about so much more than ticking boxes. It’s about staying inspired, staying sharp, and bringing the best of ourselves to every client and patient interaction. It’s about living up to the trust placed in us—not just when someone’s watching, but always.
Do you think that by taking as many “free” online courses through companies as possible, these dental hygienists feel engaged and passionate about what they do? Probably not. That’s one of the reasons I started rdhu—to create a community and an experience that sparks curiosity, excitement, and genuine growth.
Our clients deserve better. We deserve better—as professionals who take pride in growing, evolving, and staying current in an ever-changing healthcare landscape.
Thank you for being a part of rdhu, for all that you do and for your commitment to our profession.
With gratitude,
~ Kathleen
