Every week I sit down to reflect on where we are, where we’re going, and how we can stay on track in the profession we love. This past week, something has been on my mind: how quickly the world of health knowledge is changing.
I recently read on the BCCOHP website that it is widely accepted that medical knowledge has a relatively short half-life—typically between two to five years. That means within just a couple of years of graduation, half of what we learned in school we will forget, and what remains may already be outdated. When you combine rapid advancements in technology, diagnostics, research, and patient care, it becomes clear that our real learning journey begins after graduation.
And that journey never stops.
As dental hygienists, continuing education isn’t something we do just to stay compliant—it's something we do to stay competent, confident, current, and connected.
Every course we take refines our clinical decisions.
