Every week for the last 13 years, I’ve sat down—wherever I happened to be—to write this On-Track Tuesday message. Whether in my office, on the road, or even away on holiday, this weekly note has become a place to reflect on life, connect it to our professional world, and hopefully offer something meaningful to your day. It has been so heart-warming to hear how many of you look forward to reading it each week.

Over the past two Fridays, we’ve been involved in back-to-back in-person events, and it’s at these events where I’m reminded of how much this message resonates with so many of you. Knowing that these reflections support and encourage you truly fuels me to keep writing.

The energy from these in-person events has been incredible. Spectrum, just two Fridays ago—with more than 550 dental hygienists in attendance—set the tone with its amazing turnout and engagement. And then this past Saturday, our Boutique-Style Conference at the Dentsply Sirona Academy continued that momentum with another inspiring day of learning, connection, and community. The conversations, the questions, the hugs, the laughter… all of it reminded me why I write these weekly reflections. They keep us connected, focused, and moving forward together.

With that, I am very excited to share some wonderful news: Oral Hygiene (from the Oral Health Group) will now publish a monthly column titled On Track with Kathleen. I’m incredibly honoured by this opportunity. I believe we all need little reminders that what we do matters—that our work is important, our profession is evolving, and our impact is bigger than we often realize.

My first column appears in a special edition curated by my dear friend and colleague, Liisa Moore, who also sits on the Editorial Board with me. She chose a fantastic theme for this issue: Thinking Outside the Op: Exploring Other Options in the Field of Dental Hygiene. You’ll see some very familiar names contributing to this edition!

  • Liisa Moore: Confessions from a Specialty Office: There’s more to collaboration than a referral.
  • Joe Siegfried: The Sweet Spot of Dental Hygiene.
  • Christine Crawford: Passion, Purpose, and Professionalism: Reflections of a Dental Hygiene Educator.
  • And my article: The Dental Hygienist as an Entrepreneur: Turning Challenges into Opportunities.
  • …and many other wonderful contributors in this issue.

Well done, Liisa Moore — well done.

Takeaway thought...

As we continue moving through this busy season, I hope you find a moment this week to pause and acknowledge the impact you’re making. Sometimes we become so focused on the day-to-day that we forget the bigger picture: every conversation, every screening, every gentle nudge of encouragement to a client—these small moments create meaningful change. Keep showing up the way you do. It matters more than you know.

Warmly,

Kathleen
