As we get ready for two exciting weeks of live events—the CDHA conference this week in Niagara Falls and Spectrum next week in Toronto—I'm reminded of the incredible value of in-person networking. There's something special about coming together with peers and colleagues, especially in our world of dental hygiene, where so much of our work can feel solitary.

Whether you're attending a hands-on course at rdhu or a larger conference like CDHA or Spectrum, these events provide opportunities that go far beyond learning new techniques, updating your skills or earning CE credits. They offer a chance to build connections, share experiences, and grow in ways that can truly elevate your practice.

The Value of Networking:

  1. Learning Beyond the Classroom: While we all attend courses and sessions to gain new skills and knowledge, some of the most valuable insights come from casual conversations with other attendees. Networking allows us to hear different perspectives, swap tips, and discuss challenges in a way that formal presentations might not always allow. It's those impromptu discussions that can spark new ideas for your practice or career.
  2. Building Connections: The relationships we build at these events are often the ones that support us throughout our professional journeys. Whether it’s finding someone to collaborate with on a project, getting advice from a peer, or simply sharing the joys and challenges of our day-to-day work, networking helps us feel connected to a broader community.
  3. Mentorship and Support: For those new to the profession or looking to expand their skill set, live events are a perfect place to find mentors and role models. And for more seasoned professionals, it’s an opportunity to offer support and guidance to the next generation of dental hygienists. This mutual exchange of knowledge and experience is what helps our community thrive.

Upcoming Opportunities to Connect:

If you're attending the CDHA Conference this week, make the most of your time by engaging with other attendees and visiting the exhibitors (including us at rdhu!). It's a wonderful chance to see what's new, ask questions, and get hands-on with the latest products and services in the industry. We can't wait to see you there!

Next week, we’ll be at Spectrum! We’ll have an exhibitor booth, and I’ll be presenting on Quality Assurance. If you’re attending, I’d love to see you at the session or at our booth. It’s a fantastic opportunity to meet peers, exchange ideas, and gain new insights that might inspire you to explore a topic more deeply!

Here are some tips to make the most of the events:

  • Come Prepared: Before you attend, take a moment to think about who you might want to meet or what you'd like to learn. Whether it's a specific speaker or an exhibitor, having a plan can help you make the most of your time. It sets you up to attend with purpose! Come with intention :)
  • Be Open to New Connections: Sometimes the best conversations happen unexpectedly. Stay open to chatting with someone new—you never know where it could lead! Play full-out!
  • Follow Up: Don’t forget to follow up after the event. Whether it’s an email, connecting on LinkedIn, or scheduling a coffee chat, nurturing these new relationships can turn a brief encounter into a lasting professional connection.

If you’re attending CDHA or Spectrum, stop by and say hello at the rdhu booth. Let’s make the most of these opportunities to connect, learn, and grow together!
