As we enter the final quarter of 2024, it’s natural to feel the momentum of the year winding down, but this time can also be an opportunity for reflection and renewal. Whether you’ve been coasting along or striving toward big goals, the last few months of the year are the perfect time to pause, reflect, and set new intentions. Today, I invite you to consider what you want to accomplish before the year closes.

I like to picture myself at the end of the year, as if I’ve already accomplished my goal. Then, I work backwards: What steps did I take to get there? This exercise can help you map out the actions you need and guide you in creating smaller, actionable goals that lead to your ultimate achievement.

Reflecting on Your Goals

Take a moment to think about the goals you set at the beginning of the year—both personal and professional. Have you made the progress you hoped for? Have new priorities shifted your focus? It’s okay if things didn’t unfold exactly as planned; life has a way of surprising us! What matters is how we respond and reset.

Now is the time to ask yourself:

  • What small wins can I celebrate?
  • Are there any goals I still feel passionate about?
  • What adjustments can I make to finish the year feeling accomplished?

By celebrating even the smallest of wins, you remind yourself that every step forward counts. This practice keeps you motivated, whether it’s successfully implementing something new in your practice, like incorporating oral probiotics into patient care, or finding a better work-life balance.

Setting New Intentions

Rather than focusing on what hasn’t been done, let’s shift the perspective to what’s still possible. Setting new intentions allows you to ground yourself in purpose, without the pressure of rigid goals. Think of your intentions as a guide to finish the year with clarity and fulfillment, rather than a checklist to conquer.

  • Have you reached your personal and professional goals for 2024?
  • What can you do to support your professional growth?

Maybe it’s about deepening your knowledge in a specific area or attending one last course or program before the year ends to feel more connected and confident.

Many dental hygienists I’ve spoken with feel a bit unsettled about the courses they know they need or should take but haven’t gotten around to yet. It isn’t too late! Look at what’s coming up, create a goal, and join that course. You’ll end the year feeling strong and ready for what’s next.
