I had a wonderful call today with Deb Jutras, a long-time rdhu member who is truly a bright light in our community. I always love seeing Deb at rdhu events or conferences, as she radiates positivity and passion for our profession.
During our conversation, Deb shared some exciting news—her dentist is registering 10 dental hygienists for our December laser training. Although Deb is already certified in lasers, she’s joining them because, as she puts it, "You can always learn something new, and a refresh is always good." I love that mindset! Deb is the definition of a lifelong learner, and I'm excited to have her with us as we introduce some updates to our laser training. Her dedication to continuously growing and implementing new skills into her practice is truly inspiring.
We also talked about something that’s been on a lot of minds lately—retirement. Deb is currently working three days a week and, after 41 years at 'Dentistry at the Lake' in Peterborough, she still loves what she does. She’s surrounded by good people and finds fulfillment in her practice. For her, there’s no rush to retire, and she’s found a beautiful balance between work and personal life. Deb rows with her Dragon Boat team twice a week after work and, while she admits to being tired afterward, it’s a “good kind of tired.”
Our conversation got me reflecting on the times I’m asked, "When are you going to retire?" In fact, just last week, my hairstylist asked me that very question. My answer was simple—I wouldn’t know what to do with myself! Her response? "Enjoy life." But here’s the thing: I amenjoying life, and I don’t need to retire to do that. Deb and I are on the same page. We both find joy in our work, which allows us to have that great work-life balance.
One of the reasons this balance works for us is energy management. I hear from so many people who leave their work feeling drained, barely able to make it through the rest of the day. This is why I’m so passionate about presenting on Energy Management, a topic I recently wrote about in Women in Dentistry. That article is coming out in October, and I can’t wait to share it with you!
Deb also shared something that resonated deeply with me. She’s always treated her operatory as if she owns it—she runs it like it’s her business. I love to call this kind of mindset 'Intrepreneurship.' An Intrepreneur is someone who works for someone but takes ownership of their role as if it were their own business. This mindset is so fulfilling, not just for the individual but for the entire practice. Deb embodies this. She cares deeply for her patients, runs a productive and positive operatory, and has helped her practice thrive.
If you’re feeling drained or unheard in your current role, it might be time to ask yourself if the practice of your dreams is just around the corner. Can you shift your energy? Can you approach your day like an Intrepreneur? Maybe the change you need is already within your reach—whether that’s a refresh in skills, a new mindset, or even finding a practice where your voice is truly heard.
