We held our last in-person program on Saturday and look forward to taking a break in the summer from in-person and online courses to prepare for getting back at it in September! Our summers are so short. We have always planned to block off July and August and have our Academic Year from September to June so that we can also give our members the opportunity to unplug over the summer.

The summer is a time for a well-deserved break! This seasonal pause is important for our mental and physical well-being, setting the stage for a more productive and fulfilling professional development journey when September rolls around.

Whether you are working in clinical practice for a DSO or private practice, you have your own independent practice or are in a non-traditional role as a dental hygienist, here's why unplugging in the summer is essential and how it can supercharge your professional growth in the fall.

1. Recharge Your Mental Batteries

As dental professionals our lifestyle often entails a relentless pace, with constant demands on our time and energy. Over time, this can lead to burnout, reducing our creativity, productivity, and overall happiness. Taking a mental break during the summer allows our brains to rest and rejuvenate. Just like a computer needs to reboot to function optimally, our minds need downtime to process and recover from the stress and challenges of our work life!

2. Boost Creativity and Innovation

Stepping away and taking the time to relax can foster creativity. Engaging in different activities, exploring new environments, and simply allowing your mind to wander can spark fresh ideas and perspectives. When we are not tethered to our usual routines, we can think more freely and innovatively. By the time September arrives, you might find yourself brimming with new ideas and solutions that can be applied to both your personal and professional development!

3. Strengthen Personal Relationships

Summer is an excellent time to reconnect with family and friends. Strengthening these personal bonds is vital for emotional support and overall happiness. These relationships provide a grounding influence, helping to maintain a healthy work-life balance. It takes effort to plan get togethers and weekends away. Now is the time to start making plans with your loved ones!

4. Reflect and Realign Goals

Taking a step back during the summer allows you to reflect on your career goals and achievements. Where are you at with your professional goals, Pearl? Are you happy in your practice? This time of reflection is crucial for realigning your efforts and make changes where you need. If something isn't working for you, you can plan more effectively for the future during this time.

5. Improve Physical Health

Summer offers the perfect opportunity to engage in physical activities. Whether it's hiking, swimming, biking, or simply walking in nature, these activities can improve physical health, reduce stress, and enhance overall well-being. Take time for you over the summer. A healthy body supports a healthy mind.

6. Prepare for a Fresh Start

Unplugging in the summer creates a natural break in the year, offering a chance to start anew in September. I always feel like September is January. It's a frest start. A new beginning! This period of rest helps clear your mind, making it easier to absorb new information and tackle new challenges. When you return back to the 'norm' with a refreshed perspective, you are more likely to be motivated and enthusiastic about learning and growth.

7. Increase Productivity and Focus

A well-rested mind is more productive and focused. After a summer of mental relaxation, you will likely find it easier to concentrate and engage deeply with your professional development activities. This enhanced focus can lead to more effective learning and skill acquisition, ultimately benefiting your career.

Unplugging mentally during the summer is not just a luxury; it’s a necessity. It allows you to recharge, foster creativity, strengthen relationships, reflect on goals, improve health, and prepare for a fresh start. By taking this time to relax and rejuvenate, you set yourself up for a successful and productive return to professional development in September.

So, as the summer sun is calling, embrace the opportunity to unplug, knowing that it’s an investment in your future professional!
