What is the soft-tissue diode laser?

Dentists and dental hygienists employ the versatile soft-tissue diode laser to serve their patients better. It’s a handheld tool named for its primary use; the cutting and sculpting of soft tissues. However, it also works for various procedures, such as teeth whitening.

Dental operations that would usually require a scalpel you can now execute using a laser. It reduces bleeding and shortens patient healing time. Some standard procedures that commonly use soft tissues lasers include:

  • Gingivectomies
  • Periodontal treatments
  • Crown lengthening
  • Troughing

Because of the reduced pain, swelling, and healing time associated with soft tissue lasers, many patients prefer their use and experience reduced anxiety. There are many other benefits to soft-tissue lasers, making them an essential certification for dental hygienists.

What are the benefits of using a soft-tissue diode laser?

Increased patient comfort and reduced stress are reasons enough to incorporate soft-tissue lasers into your skillset. But, they also come with a range of benefits that make them indispensable in the dental office.

  • Safe to use around implants, including metal crowns and amalgam restorations.
  • They don’t damage hard tissue.
  • Good visibility and precision cutting.
  • Good hemostasis reduces or eliminates the need for sutures.

As the technology refines, the applications for lasers continue to expand. You’ll know the most current dental practices when you add a laser course for dental hygienists to your continuing education.
