Dental implants play an important role as an excellent option to replace missing teeth. Over millions of patients have dental implants and the numbers continue to increase with time. However, dental implants are not invincible; just like teeth, they are susceptible to inflammation and bone loss. As more implants are placed, we are seeing an increase in peri-implant diseases. This course will highlight the hygienist's role in the prevention, recognition and maintenance of dental implants based on the most updated research.

Course Description:
Radiography Check-up – For the Client and the RDH! will provided an overview of radiographs in dentistry and their importance to the assessment phase of AdPIE. Strategies for effective communication with clients will be discussed and how to remove any fears associated with dental radiographs. Updates with regards to H.A.R.P will also be discussed. Radiographs are an essential part of client-centred care and diagnosis – let’s make sure the client’s check-up is a thorough one!

Navigating the changing landscape of trends impacting both oral and oropharyngeal cancer screening is no easy task for today’s dental hygienist. Dental hygienists must recognize the growing influence of lifestyle factors on oral and oropharyngeal cancer incidence. The fastest growing profile has limited visual acuity and very subtle life saving symptoms. With the rise among younger populations, it’s critical to adopt techniques and comprehensive risk assessment for early detection and intervention to cater to the needs of today’s diverse head and neck cancer population.

Course Description:
In this fast-paced, hands-on session, Dani will inspire you to experience the benefits of curved ultrasonic instruments. These instruments have characteristics able to access periodontal sites better than hand scalers or straight ultrasonic tips. Left and rights can be an integral part of your practice transformation, and after this course, you won’t want to put curved tips down!

5) Oral Probiotics: where does current data stand in their effects on oral hygiene?

Probiotics are "live organisms that when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit to the host". It is the third most used natural products among the supplements with a 46 billion dollar market in probiotic ingredients. As oral probiotics have a long and proven track record in improving gut health, researchers wondered if the same were to say for oral health. This course will unveil the truth behind oral probiotics based on the latest research and explore their effects on oral health including natural teeth and dental implants.

Bios:
Dr. Polly Huang
Dr. Huang is board certified in periodontology and dental implant surgery. She was born in Taipei, but grew up in Vancouver, Canada. She received several awards including the Gold Medal Award, graduating at the top of her class from the University of British Columbia where she was also Valedictorian. Other achievements include the Crest/Oral B/CDHA Dental hygiene baccalaureate prize and the Health Promotion Award from Sunstar Butler. She practiced as a dental hygienist for 6 years in Vancouver then received her D.M.D. from the University of Pittsburgh and completed her residency in Periodontics at Nova Southeastern University. She also earned her Master of Science in Dentistry degree for her thesis in dental probiotics and their effects on peri-implant diseases.
Dr. Huang has strong training in all areas of periodontics including treating complex periodontal diseases, performing regenerative procedures and placing dental implants. Specifically, she excels in mucogingival grafting procedures, such as treating gingival recession defects using a minimally invasive tunneling technique. In 2019, she won the prestigious Best Case Study Award given by the Academy of Osseointegration for her case on "Ridge augmentation of the Atrophic Maxilla”.
Dr. Huang aims to promote a trusting relationship for her patients, giving them a safe and comfortable environment with her gentle touch and sense of humor. She has spoken at numerous dental events educating peers, dentists and dental hygienists which she thoroughly enjoys meeting everyone and making lifelong friendships. She is fluent in both Chinese and English. When she's not working, she likes to travel and try different cuisines from all over the world.
Christine Crawford, RDH, B.Sc., M.Ed
Christine is an experienced clinician and educator. She has a true passion for education and life-long learning. Christine completed her Master of Education in Post-Secondary Studies. Her research involves supportive learning for all adult learners, with a focus on academic coaching.
She is knowledgeable in many aspects of dental hygiene, including periodontology, AdPIE process of care, dental radiography, and orthodontics, with interests specifically in obstructed airways and functional occlusion.
Christine was awarded the CDHO Peer Mentor of the Year in 2018 and is a Quality Assurance Coach with the rdhu. Christine promotes a fun and engaging learning environment where everyone can achieve personal and professional fulfillment.
Jo-Anne Jones, RDH
As an international, award-winning speaker, Jo-Anne Jones has done over 1,000 presentations across the U.S., Canada, and the UK. Jo-Anne brings life, energy, inspiration and a dynamic speaking style that has made her a sought-after lecturer in the dental community. Jo-Anne joins the 2022 Dentistry Today CE Leaders for the 12th consecutive year and is a 2021 Fellowship Award recipient with the International Academy of Dental Facial Esthetics. In the midst of preparing to present her extensive research on HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer to her national association, Jo-Anne’s family were dealt a crushing blow of having a family member diagnosed with late-stage HPV-positive tonsillar cancer. Jo-Anne proudly partners with the Oral Cancer Foundation in conveying the urgent need for change in the way we screen for oral and oropharyngeal cancer. Jo-Anne was instrumental in launching the international 'Check Your Mouth' campaign promoting oral self-examination between professional visits.
Dani Botbyl, RDH
Dani is a registered dental hygienist and has served as the National Clinical Educator with Dentsply Sirona Canada for 25 years. She has developed and presented hundreds evidence-based educational programs to dental hygiene students, pre and post-doctoral dental students, faculty and practicing clinicians nationally and internationally.
Dani has been a trailblazer for the advancement of ultrasonic instrumentation in dental hygiene practice and education in North America and abroad. She is credited with assembling and leading the first team of researchers to investigate the topic of ultrasonic instrumentation education, conducting several studies on the integration of an enriched ultrasonic curriculum and its outcomes in dental hygiene programs. This culmination of her knowledge and research has produced multiple publications in industry and peer-reviewed journals and textbooks. In 2018, with her co-authors, Dani was awarded the Canadian Journal of Dental Hygiene Research Award for Best Original Research Paper. Dani co-authored the second edition of Ultrasonic Periodontal Debridement: Theory and Technique (2023) and is a contributing author to the soon to published sixth edition of Darby and Walsh Dental Hygiene Theory and Practice.
